Getting started with Papirer

Papirer is built on a simple idea: logging an expense should be so quick that you never feel like skipping it. No forms, no required fields, no endless menus. You enter the expense, the app takes care of the rest.

Contents

Your first expense

At the bottom of the main screen there's an input bar. That's where it all happens. Type as you'd tell a friend about a purchase:

  • "coffee 4.50 at Starbucks"
  • "rent 1200 on the 1st"
  • "dinner friday 45 in restaurants"
  • "groceries 62 two days ago"

There's no specific order to follow. "45 dinner friday" works just as well as "dinner friday 45". Papirer understands the amount, detects the category, and figures out the date, all automatically. If you don't mention when, it assumes today.

Hit send and you're done. If the app needs you to review something, it'll show you a draft to confirm before saving.

Other ways to add expenses

Typing isn't the only option. All of these are available to every user:

Voice

When the input bar is empty, the send button turns into a microphone. Tap it, say your expense out loud ("lunch with Maria thirty dollars friday") and the app will transcribe it and extract the details.

Receipt photo

Tap the + button on the left side of the input bar to open the attachment menu. From there you can take a photo with your camera or pick an image from your gallery. The app reads the receipt and extracts the merchant, amount, and date.

PDF documents

From the same attachment menu you can select a PDF from your files. Handy for digital invoices or receipts that arrive by email.

Share from other apps

If you receive a receipt or screenshot in another app, you can share it directly to Papirer using your device's share option. The app will process it automatically.

Your main screen

The main screen is your control center. At the top there's a card showing your balance for the current period — how much you've spent and, if you track income, your net balance. This card has several views you can explore by swiping between them: overall balance and upcoming recurring payments. With Pro, you'll also see your goal progress.

Below, your expenses appear grouped by day, with each day's total next to the date.

Navigating between periods

Swipe left or right on the expense list to move between periods. You can see the previous week or month with a gesture, and jump back to the current one at any time.

The view mode (weekly or monthly) can be changed from the menu.

Privacy mode

If at any point you don't want amounts visible on screen, you can enable privacy mode from the menu. Numbers are hidden until you turn it off.

Getting around the app

Papirer doesn't have a tab bar. From the main screen, tap the menu icon to access everything else:

  • Reports — Summary of your spending (advanced reports are Pro)
  • Goals — Spending limits by category or overall (Pro)
  • Recurring — Automatic payments like subscriptions or bills
  • Categories — Manage your custom categories
  • Shared lists — Group expenses with other people (Pro)
  • Account — Your profile and subscription status
  • Settings — Currency, week start day, notifications, and more
  • Help — The articles you're reading right now

The menu also includes quick actions to switch between weekly and monthly views, search transactions, filter by list, and toggle privacy mode.

Smart categories

When you type an expense, Papirer assigns a category automatically based on the description. "Groceries" goes to Food, "uber" to Transport, "netflix" to Entertainment. You don't need to think about it.

If you want your own categories, you can create them from the Categories section. Each category has a name and an icon, which you can pick from a large catalog or let the AI suggest one based on the name.

You can also merge categories if you end up with duplicates over time, and restore deleted categories if you change your mind.

Papirer Pro

The free version includes everything essential: text, voice, photo, and PDF input, custom categories, recurring expenses, and unlimited history.

Pro unlocks features designed for those who want to go a step further:

  • Spending goals — Set limits by category or overall, and get alerts as you approach them
  • Advanced reports — Trends, category breakdowns, period comparisons, top expenses, and more
  • AI insights — Smart analysis of your spending patterns with anomaly alerts and predictions
  • Shared lists — Create expense lists with others, track who paid what, and settle up
  • Advanced export — Export to Excel or PDF with custom filters (basic CSV is free)
